Women’s Beanies

The Cambridge Dictionary defines a beanie as 1. A small hat that fits closely to the head and 2. A hat made from wool with a small round wool ball on top. While we’re not here to deny that either of those definitions are true, we firmly believe that cute women’s beanies are so much more than that.

They’re fashionable, they’re cozy, they never go out of style. There are so many reasons to be in love with beanie hats!

A Little Beanie History

Wool hats, knitted cap, sock hats, skullcaps, stocking cap… these are all words you’ve probably heard of to describe a beanie. The French Canadian word is tuque, which some etymologists think probably comes from the Old Spanish word “toca” for a type of soft, close-fitting headdress worn 500 years ago. And did you know that in Malaysia, beanies are commonly referred to as serkup?

So where, exactly, did the word “beanie” come from? It’s not totally clear, but some historians believe the name derives from the fact that the cloth-covered button on the crown of some traditional beanies is about the size of a bean seed. It’s also probable that it comes from the slang term “bean,” meaning “head.” It’s all kinda a mystery — but we think calling knit caps “beanies” is super cute, so we’re not too worried about it.
